Sir J aka Javier García Murcia has been developing his career since the mid 90s in the Barcelona area and nowadays is an undisputed musical pillar when talking about Jamaican music within the Spanish State.

Almost a self-taught guitarist player (although he’s been always taking musical lessons in his free time after work) Sir J has developed an unique sweet and smooth guitar skills that can be recognized at first when mixing jazz and Jamaican music.

Nonetheless, he is the man after tons of projects and bands such as The Kinky Coo Coo’s (ska-soul-reggae), The Jabs (raw reggae) or the band he leads, The Oldians (rocksteady-ska-jazz), as well as taking active part or featuring in combos like The Aggronauts (early & soulful reggae), Lord Kaya (60s ska), Flight 404 (early reggae), Ruben López & The Diatones (rocksteady, reggae), The Catalonians (ska-jazz), Dring Dublé (reggae-dancehall), The Blackstarliners (backing band, ska-rocksteady-reggae), The Bostons (ska, rocksteady), The Cabrians (ska), Pirat’s Sound Sistema (hip hop, reggae), The Notes SkaJazz (ska-jazz), Delighters (ska-jazz), Root Diamonds (ska-jazz), Red Soul Community (pump reggae) or seminal ska-jazz-reggae bands The 8th Jet and La Jeta Band.

He also is the first call of main Catalan ska, reggae and roots bands and producers when an album needs a ‘magic Jamaican jazz’ guitar touch and a lead guitarist when a backing-band must be packed to support a talented vocalist (he has backed Dave Barker, The Pioneers, Ken Boothe, Laurel Aitken, Rico Rodriguez, Christopher Ellis, Roy Ellis, Alpheus, Earl Sixteen, Sister Audrey, Alex Desert and Greg Lee from Hepcat, Vic Ruggiero from The Slackers, Dr Ring Ding, Jazzbo, Alberto Tarin and Earl Appleton from the NYSJE, Paul Carter from Intensified, Chantelle Ernández…).

Sir J’s musical hyperactivity has also led him to become as Alejo Peloche, his musical partner, the men behind the KinkyLab Studios, a Jamaican music hub in Barcelona where dozens of albums have been musically crafted, recorded and mixed (as well as being the rehearsal place for The Kinky Coo Coo’s, among other bands). KinkyLab has been the place where Sir J’s has developed, in the last ten years, his skills of musical production, recording and mixing. The place where, for sure, he’s spent most of his time the last ten years and the place where Jamaican legends such as Rico Rodriguez, Dave Barker, Larry McDonald or Alex Desert and Greg Lee have rehearsed and recorded.

Summer of 2013 Sir J is hitting the road: several weekend festivals and tours like Nowa Reggae backing Alpheus and officially introducing The Jabs and a mini-tour with The Oldians supporting their fourth album Downtown Rock, among other shows.

While finishing the first album of The Jabs (with organist Xevi ‘Gos the Boss’) and the new LP by The Kinky Coo Coo’s Sweet, fun and ready (with Alejo Peloche), Sir J takes a week off in a Mediterranean island and comes back to KinkyLab with a bunch of ideas for new songs in his mind.
He is finishing two albums at the same time but he finds time to make real songs out of his ideas and the tapes and files collected at Kinky Lab after all these years of recording sessions.
Got a riddim section from here, recorded bass pattern from there, made some phone calls and arranged some extra recording sessions, and a whole new album is here, under the name of Sir J and the KinkyLab All Stars.

Sounds from the Vulcano! features the cream of the crop of Barcelona Jamaican music scene: drum tracks by Alejo Peloche, Victor Laguna and Xavi Angulo, bass patterns by Álvaro Taborda, Ricard Tejada and Sir J himself, hammonds and pianos by Dani Lampérez and Eduard Fernàndez, saxos by David ‘El Niño’ Carrasco and Ricard Vinyets and percussions by Héctor Fábregas and Sir J himself.

This first solo album by Sir J is full of instrumental organ-injected tunes, pop-a-top early reggae, smooth but tight driven guitar rocksteady and magically selected spots of 50s flavors and light dub ambiances.

If you are keen on any of the bands listed here, you love the Jamaican 60s and 70s or are straight in love with Sir J’s previous productions… you will dig these songs. We call it Barcelona, we call it KinkyLab and we call him Sir J. This is the best album by an all-star band under the orders of a band leader. This is the best way to understand, share and enjoy Sir J’s Jamaican musical universe.
